CCNYC PRESENTS: 'BETWEEN THE LINES' A SOLO EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY ELIZABETH ADAMS. THURSDAY, MAY 6, 2010, 5:30-11PM, AT HEAVEN STUDIO GALLERY - 10 JAY STREET, SUITE 605, DUMBO, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

Existing side by side, we connect with one another daily.  We, as Individuals, combine to create one body of people, one species, one spirit, connected infinitely.
From the moment we are conceived, we have unique traits that define our individuality.  These traits are first identified by others and then discovered on our own.

When we begin to understand our individuality, along with our vulnerabilities, we construct barriers to protect and identify ourselves.  In defense of our vulnerabilities, we begin to separate from the community.  We draw lines between our selves and others.  When we feel adequately disconnected from the whole, we seek out spirituality, love from others, and to feel connected again.  Living in constant balance between individuality and the spirit of community, the physical world around us is a product of our decision.

Elizabeth's current work attempts to visually create a balance between individuality and community.   Each portrait depicts an individual, the face being the most physically defining trait.   Together the individuals combine to create one body of people working as one life force.

Light, color and metallics are used to convey the common spirit.  Interrupting this force are images of manmade barriers that are used to separate an individual from the community.  These barriers rely visually on the use of repetition and lines, which reference man's use of separation throughout life and history.  These barriers are visibly affected by weather and the elements.  Using this to convey the spirit of nature, Elizabeth's work shows that no matter how much we try to control our surroundings/boundaries, the common life force in all of us is constant, infinite, and unstoppable.
